What it is
STANAG 4023 is the NATO Standardization Agreement titled Energetic materials, specification for penthrite (PETN). Edition 6 was promulgated in July 2022 under NATO's CNAD, AC/326 CASG, SG/A, EMT, and covers the publication AOP-4023, edition A. NATO has not released STANAG 4023 publicly, so this page describes it from the Czech defence standards index entry for the national standard that implements it.
Where it is cited
The Czech defence standard ČOS 137608 implements STANAG 4023 edition 6 (AOP-4023(A)), together with three other STANAGs: 4022, 4025 and 4284. The Czech standards index describes ČOS 137608 as setting out qualitative requirements for the explosives hexogen, octogen, tritol and pentrite, intended for deliveries between NATO member states, and giving uniform test methods for evaluating their quality. That description covers pentrite, the substance STANAG 4023 specifies, alongside the other explosives the same Czech standard implements.
NATO's own public AOP-4682 lists an earlier edition, STANAG 4023 edition 5, among its related documents as a specification for PETN (penthrite or nitropenta) from one NATO nation to another.
