What it is
STANAG 4193 covers the technical characteristics of the IFF Mk XIIA system, Part I: system description and general characteristics. Edition 3 was promulgated on 23 May 2016, under the committee recorded as DPC, DPC, CaP2. NATO has not released STANAG 4193 publicly, so this page describes it from two public NATO publications that cite it, AEDP-12 and AEP-84.
Where it is cited
AEDP-12 lists an attribute of a tracked object that carries the identification friend foe (IFF) information associated with the track. It describes that datatype as the value sent plus a mode, lists the valid mode values in its own table, and refers the reader to STANAG 4193 for more information.
AEP-84 is more specific. Several of its data element tables include a Mode 5 National Origin field and a Mode 5 Mission Code field, both of unsigned type. For both, AEP-84 gives the range as no restrictions and, in the description, refers the reader to STANAG 4193. The same pair appears against STANAG 4193 in each of those tables. The neighbouring Mode 5 fields, such as squitter type and time of day source, are defined in AEP-84 itself and are not attributed to STANAG 4193 there. So in these sources STANAG 4193 is the reference for IFF modes and for the Mode 5 national origin and mission code values.
