NATO has not released this STANAG publicly. It is NATO UNCLASSIFIED, and organisations that need it obtain it through their national standardization authority.
What it is
STANAG 4230, Energetic material, specification for HNS (hexanitrostilbene), covers AOP-4230 edition A. Edition 2 was promulgated in December 2025 by CNAD, AC/326 CASG, SG/A, EMT. Its first edition was titled Explosives - Specification for HNS (Hexanitrostilbene) for deliveries from one NATO nation to another, as AOP-4682 lists it alongside the NATO specifications for TNT, HMX, nitroguanidine and ammonium perchlorate. NATO has not released STANAG 4230 publicly, so this page describes it from the Czech implementation, ČOS 137609.
What the Czech implementation covers
ČOS 137609, the Czech defence standard for raw materials used in the production of military explosives, implements both STANAG 4230 Edition 1 and STANAG 4543 Edition 2 (AOP-4543(A)). Its index entry describes the standard as setting out qualitative requirements for the explosives hexanitrostilbene and nitrotriazolone, intended for deliveries between NATO member states, and as giving uniform test methods for assessing their quality. The entry covers both explosives together and does not break the requirements down by substance. The Czech standard implements Edition 1 of STANAG 4230, not the current Edition 2, so its description may not reflect every change in the later edition.
