NATO has not released this STANAG publicly. It is NATO UNCLASSIFIED, and organisations that need it obtain it through their national standardization authority.
What it is
STANAG 4290 is NATO's standard for the optical connector used on medium-rate and high-rate military tactical links. Edition 2 was promulgated on 25 January 2018, under the sponsorship of DPC, DPC, CaP1, N&S CaT, and it covers the publication AComP-4290, edition A.
NATO marks STANAG 4290 NATO UNCLASSIFIED but has not released it publicly, so this page describes it from public NATO publications that cite it.
Where it is cited
Two NATO publications on Protected Core Networking, AComP-5639 and AComP-5640, list it in their references as "Standard For Optical Connector Medium-rate and High-rate Military Tactical Link - AComP-4290 Edition A Version 2".
Both cite it in the requirement CEth-Con for the Ethernet carrier profile: "Ethernet shall be supported at least as 1000BASE-T with 8P8C (“RJ-45”) connectors or 1000BASE-LX with the tactical connectors defined in [STANAG 4290]." The requirements that follow describe the two options. 1000BASE-T is IEEE 802.3 Ethernet over copper wiring, and 1000BASE-LX is IEEE 802.3 "1000BASE-LX (long wavelength laser)". In these publications, then, STANAG 4290 supplies the tactical connector for the 1000BASE-LX option, while the copper option uses IEC 60603-7 8P8C modular connectors.
