What it is

STANAG 4506 is the NATO Standardization Agreement on the uniaxial tensile test for explosive materials, in its first edition, promulgated 29 March 2000. Most STANAGs are a short cover committing nations to a separate Allied Publication that carries the technical detail. This one is not: it names "Related Document: None" and carries the test method itself, across two annexes. What a nation ratifies and what a test facility runs are the same document.

Why a common method matters

The agreement's own aim is "to standardize the uniaxial tensile test for explosive materials," so that every participating nation has the same means of determining a material's tensile mechanical properties and knows how a given result was produced. That is a comparability problem, not an acceptance one. STANAG 4506 fixes how the test is run and how the outcome is reported; it sets no limit for what a result should be, and it passes no judgement on one. Deciding whether a material's tensile properties are good enough for a given use sits outside this agreement.

Two annexes, one specification

Annex A carries the test procedure: the scope of what the method applies to, the technical definitions the test measures and reports against, and requirements running from the apparatus and environmental conditioning through to specimen preparation, the test method itself, and how results are calculated, closing with a short list of cautions about where the method's own results can be questionable. Annex B is the data exchange format: a standard report sheet covering the test site and conditions, the specimen's own identification, the equipment used, and the tensile stress and strain characteristics the test produced. This page does not describe what either annex requires in detail. The apparatus, the specimen preparation, and the property values are exactly the technical detail a competent test facility needs from the STANAG itself, not from a summary of it.

How it binds

A STANAG binds a nation, not a company. Ratification is "the fulfilment by which a member nation formally accepts, with or without reservation, the content of a Standardization Agreement," and implementation is the separate step of a nation issuing the orders or instructions that put the agreement into effect. Participating nations agree to use the Annex A procedure and the Annex B report format "when requested by the procuring nation" - so what actually puts the test to work is a request from the nation procuring the material, not the STANAG's existence on its own. None of this reaches a supplier or a test facility directly; it reaches one only when a contract, a tender, or a national requirement calls for a tensile-test report produced against this method.

What it does not cover

STANAG 4506 does not itself certify an organisation, qualify a material, or set a numeric limit for what counts as an acceptable tensile result. It standardises how the test is run and how the outcome is written down and exchanged; what the procuring nation or a customer then does with that report, including whether a given result is good enough, is outside the agreement. The document names no related document and no accreditation or certification scheme of its own.

Is STANAG 4506 mandatory?

Not by itself. A STANAG binds the nations that ratify it, and it reaches a supplier or test facility only through a contract, a tender, or a national requirement that calls for a tensile-test report produced against this method. Whether it applies to a given piece of work is a question for that contract, not for this page.

Does STANAG 4506 specify the test method itself, or point to another publication?

It specifies the method itself. Unlike most STANAGs, which are a short cover for a separate Allied Publication, STANAG 4506 names "Related Document: None" and carries the full test procedure and reporting format in its own two annexes.

Does STANAG 4506 set an acceptance limit for a material's tensile properties?

No. It standardises how the test is run and how the result is reported, so that a figure produced in one nation's laboratory means the same thing when another nation reads it. Deciding what result is acceptable for a given material or use is made elsewhere, outside this agreement.
