What it is
STANAG 4543 covers AOP-4543, the NATO specification for the explosive NTO (3-nitro-1,2,4-triazol-5-one) for deliveries from one NATO nation to another. Edition 2 was promulgated in March 2023, sponsored by CNAD, AC/326 CASG, SG/A, EMT. NATO has not released STANAG 4543 publicly, so this page describes it from a public national source, the Czech defence standards index entry for the standard that implements it.
What the Czech implementation covers
The Czech defence standards index lists ČOS 137609 as implementing both STANAG 4230 edition 1 and STANAG 4543 edition 2, AOP-4543(A). Its Czech title names two raw materials for military explosives, hexanitrostilbene and nitrotriazolone. Its own entry describes the standard as setting out qualitative requirements for the two explosives, hexanitrostilbene and nitrotriazolone, intended for deliveries between NATO member states, and as giving uniform test methods for evaluating their quality. Because ČOS 137609 covers both explosives jointly, the index entry does not separate what applies to nitrotriazolone alone, and states no figures or thresholds beyond that description.
Other public NATO publications that list STANAG 4543, such as AOP-4682 and STANAG 4682, name its edition 1 only inside a reference list of energetic-material standards, most of them specifications for deliveries from one NATO nation to another, alongside STANAGs 4284, 4299, 4300 and 4566 among others. They add nothing about its content beyond that listing.
