What it is
STANAG 4566, Energetic materials, specification for hexanitrohexaazaisowurtzitane (HNIW/CL-20), is the NATO standardisation agreement that covers AOP-4566 edition A. Edition 2 was promulgated in September 2021 under CNAD, AC/326 CASG, SG/A, EMT. NATO has not released STANAG 4566 publicly, so this page describes it from a Czech national standard that implements it.
What the Czech implementation covers
The Czech defence standard ČOS 137607, on raw materials for the production of military explosives (nitroguanidine, the explosive CL-20, and n-butyl-2-nitratoethylnitramine), implements STANAG 4566 edition 2 (AOP-4566(A)) together with STANAG 4026 edition 3 and STANAG 4583 edition 1 in a single document covering all three raw materials. The Czech index describes it as setting out qualitative requirements for nitroguanidine, the explosive CL-20, and n-butyl-2-nitratoethylnitramine intended for the production of military explosives, and as giving uniform test methods for evaluating the quality of these raw materials.
Where it is cited
Public NATO publications list STANAG 4566 among the specifications for energetic materials. AOP-4682 cites edition 1 as "Explosives - Specification for CL20 (Hexanitrohexaazaisowurtzitane) for deliveries from one NATO nation to another", alongside the specifications for ammonium perchlorate, NTO and GUDN and the test procedures for n-Butyl NENA.
