What it is
STANAG 4583, Energetic materials, specification for n-butyl 2-nitratoethyl nitramine (n-butyl NENA), covers AOP-4583. Edition 2 was promulgated in March 2024 under CNAD, AC/326 CASG, SG/A, EMT. NATO has not released STANAG 4583 publicly, so this page describes it from the Czech defence standards index and from public NATO publications that cite it.
What the Czech implementation covers
According to the Czech defence standards index, ČOS 137607, the Czech standard on raw materials for the production of military explosives, implements STANAG 4583 Edition 1 together with STANAG 4026 Edition 3 and STANAG 4566 Edition 2 (AOP-4566(A)). The index entry describes the Czech standard as setting quality requirements for nitroguanidine, the explosive CL-20 (hexanitrohexaazaisowurtzitane) and n-butyl-2-nitratoethylnitramine intended for the production of military explosives, and as giving uniform test methods for evaluating the quality of these raw materials. The entry covers the three materials together and does not say which requirements or test methods apply to n-butyl NENA. It also names Edition 1 of STANAG 4583, not the current Edition 2.

Two public NATO publications, AOP-4682 and STANAG 4682, list STANAG 4583 alongside other NATO explosives and energetic materials specifications. AOP-4682 names Edition 1 and gives its title as "Chemical test procedures for n-Butyl-2-Nitratoethyl-Nitramine (n-Butyl NENA)", and STANAG 4682 as chemical test procedures and requirements for n-butyl 2-nitratoethyl nitramine.
