What it is
STANAG 4876 is a NATO Standardization Agreement. It is not a technical specification in its own right: it is the agreement by which NATO nations commit to implement ALP-10, Edition D, NATO's Guidance for Integrated Life Cycle Support. The methods, outcomes and supportability data requirements a reader usually wants live inside ALP-10 itself, not inside STANAG 4876. Read on its own, STANAG 4876 requires almost nothing of a supplier directly - its obligations run to nations, and it reaches a contractor only indirectly, once a nation has implemented it and a contract or tender invokes ALP-10 or an integrated life cycle support (ILS) requirement.
Who it binds, and how
STANAG 4876 is explicit that it binds nations rather than organisations or suppliers. Its own implementation clause says the STANAG "will be considered implemented when a member state has issued the necessary orders/instructions to require and introduce integrated life cycle support (ILS) in the development and delivery of system support solutions in accordance with ALP-10." Ratification and implementation are separate steps, and the document invites nations that have not yet reported their position to "advise the NSO of their intention regarding its ratification and implementation." So "is STANAG 4876 mandatory" has no single answer: it depends on whether a given nation has ratified and implemented it, and, for a supplier, on whether a specific contract invokes ALP-10 as a result. Once a nation has implemented STANAG 4876, ILS itself "shall be a tailored approach according to the required ILS outcomes for each programme/project/product" - there is no single fixed checklist even then.
What the agreement actually commits nations to
Under "Agreement," participating nations agree to implement ALP-10, Edition D. Under "Implementation of the agreement," a nation implements the STANAG by issuing the orders or instructions needed to introduce ILS into the development and delivery of system support solutions, and Allies and NATO bodies must then report their implementation details through NATO's electronic reporting tool; partner nations are invited to do the same. None of this is written as a duty on a supplier - it is a duty on the nation and on the NATO bodies that run procurement and sustainment programmes. The agreement sets no fixed date of its own: NATO Effective Date is marked "Not applicable."
A cover agreement, not the guidance itself
The distinction matters because a reader who only has STANAG 4876 in hand does not yet have anything to design or support against. The actual life cycle support guidance sits in ALP-10. STANAG 4876's own "Interoperability requirements" frame the job as providing "a standardized approach to the development of systems of interest lifecycle design and management, including a standardized approach to the collection, management, organization, and use of supportability data, linking the elements of the discipline with the life cycle stages throughout." Everything a support engineer or acquisition authority needs to work to sits behind that acceptance, inside ALP-10, not in the promulgation letter itself. STANAG 4876 also names three related documents an organisation working with ALP-10 is likely to meet alongside it: STANAG 4728 on system life cycle management, and AAP-20 and AAP-48, which carry the life cycle stage definitions ALP-10 links its own elements to.
What replaced what
STANAG 4876 replaces STANREC 4808, following an uplift of ALP-10 to Edition D. The Superseded Documents section is specific about the predecessor: "STANREC 4808, Edition 1, dated 23 October 2017." A STANREC recommends rather than commits nations to ratify, so the move from STANREC 4808 to STANAG 4876 is also a move from a recommendation to a ratified agreement - a reader who remembers ILS guidance under AC/327 as a recommendation is remembering the earlier document; ALP-10 at Edition D now sits under a STANAG.
What it does not cover
STANAG 4876 names no supportability metric, no test method and no pass/fail criterion of its own - that detail lives entirely in ALP-10. It also names no assessment or certification scheme: its only stated check is that the STANAG itself "is to be reviewed in accordance with AAP-03," which is a periodic review of whether the agreement is still current, recorded in the NSDD, not an audit of any organisation or product.

Can a company be certified to STANAG 4876?
No. STANAG 4876 describes no certification or accreditation scheme. Its only stated check is a periodic review of the agreement's own currency under AAP-03. NATO does not certify organisations or products against a STANAG.
