STANAG 5500 NATO message text formatting system (ADatP-3)
Developers and integrators of systems that generate or parse NATO formatted messages, such as unmanned aircraft control stations and imagery-interchange systems, and the programmes that specify them.
STANAG 5500 (ADatP-3, CONFORMETS) is NATO's message text formatting agreement. NATO has not released it publicly; this page describes it from public NATO publications that cite it.

NATO has not released this STANAG publicly. It is NATO UNCLASSIFIED, and organisations that need it obtain it through their national standardization authority.
What it is
STANAG 5500 is the NATO Standardization Agreement titled Concept of NATO Message Text Formatting System (CONFORMETS). Edition 8 was promulgated on 21 February 2019 under the DPC, DPC, CaP1, MTF CaT committee, and it covers the publication ADatP-3 (edition A version 4). NATO has not released STANAG 5500 publicly, so this page describes it only from public NATO publications that cite it: AEP-84, AMedP-5.1 and JBP-2021.2.
Where it is cited
AEP-84, which deals with unmanned aircraft system (UAS) control stations, says that "STANAG 5500, ADatP-3, defines a catalogue of standard messages for tasking and status reporting", but that there is no agreement on which specific messages and fields UASs should use. It states that "ADatP-3 tasking messages defined in STANAG 5500 Edition 4 and STANAG 7149 are appropriate for tasking UA missions within the UCS", and that ADatP-3 message reports will be used for in-flight and mission reports as appropriate. It adds that "There are numerous messages contained in STANAG 5500, NATO FORMETS ADatP-3 and STANAG 7149", several of which it treats as relevant to control-station command and control across operational environments from peacetime to wartime. Note that AEP-84 refers to Edition 4, not the current Edition 8.
AMedP-5.1 lists STANAG 5500 (ADatP-3, NATO Message Text Formatting System) among the documents to consider when developing medical reporting systems and formats for the multinational NATO environment.
JBP-2021.2, an ISO/IEC BIIF profile, lets a text data segment carry message text formatting, signalled by the value MTF in its TXTFMT field. For examples of the USMTF format it refers readers to STANAG 5500 (NSIF) or MIL-STD-6040 (NITF).
