STANAG 5522 Link 22 tactical data exchange

STANAG 5522 is the NATO agreement covering ATDLP-5.22, the Link 22 tactical data exchange standard also known as NATO Improved Link Eleven (NILE). NATO has not released it publicly; this page describes it from AEDP-02, a public NATO publication that cites it.

NATO has not released this STANAG publicly. It is NATO UNCLASSIFIED, and organisations that need it obtain it through their national standardization authority.
What it is
STANAG 5522 is the NATO agreement covering ATDLP-5.22 (record title: Tactical data LINK - LINK 22 - ATDLP-5.22 edition C). AEDP-02 titles it Tactical Data Exchange-Link 22 NATO Improved Link Eleven (NILE). Edition 7 was promulgated on 9 July 2024, sponsored by DPC, DPC, CaP1, TDL CaT. NATO has not released STANAG 5522 or ATDLP-5.22 publicly, so this page describes them from AEDP-02, a public NATO publication that cites STANAG 5522.
Where it is cited
AEDP-02 describes STANAG 5522 in its section 4.1.17, directly after its entry on Link 16: "STANAG 5522 specifies the Link 22 tactical message standard, which enhanced data exchange and provides a new, layered communications architecture to replace Link 11 (STANAG 5511)." It adds that "Link 22 is a NATO secure radio system that provides Beyond Line-of-Sight (BLOS) communications and is primarily used in the maritime environment." AEDP-02 also states that Link 22 interconnects air, surface, subsurface and ground-based tactical data systems.
