What AMedP-1.14 sets out
AMedP-1.14 is the NATO Allied Medical Publication that gives nations a shared way to categorise military motor ambulances by medical capability, and sets the minimum requirements a motor ambulance's medical compartment must meet for each category. Edition B, Version 1 was promulgated in January 2025, effective on receipt, and supersedes Edition A, Version 1. Nations record their agreement to use it through STANAG 2872, the agreement that gives the publication its force.
The document's own scope is narrow, and it says so directly: it "concerns the medical design requirements only and does not address details of non-clinical vehicle requirements" beyond the minimum requirements for the medical compartment. General vehicle characteristics, crew safety, cross-terrain mobility and armour protection, are left to whichever NATO standards on those subjects apply, and this AMedP explicitly does not restrict a nation from mandating further equipment of its own. It also puts CBRN evacuation planning and the training or medical education of ambulance crews outside its scope, pointing both elsewhere.
The four ambulance types
Chapter 3 defines a "motor ambulance", wheeled or tracked, not rail, and sorts military motor ambulances into four types by medical capability rather than by chassis: a transport ambulance for patients not expected to become emergency cases, a multifunction ambulance combining primary health care and MEDEVAC, an emergency ambulance for the full range of trauma and other medical emergencies, and a mobile intensive care ambulance able to sustain in-transit care for the most dependent patients. The document draws these four category definitions from the civil standard EN 1789:2020, Medical vehicles and their equipment - Road ambulances, which it also lists among its references. It does not state that meeting AMedP-1.14 satisfies EN 1789:2020, or the reverse.
What Annex A actually asks for
Annex A is where the minimum requirements themselves live, set out as a table against the four ambulance types. It covers the patient compartment's interior layout and stretcher handling, internal and external communication, temperature control, lighting, noise, electrical power, on-board storage, and a defined range of medical equipment, with capability rising from Type A through Type D. For several items, notably fixed medical gas supply and its servicing, medical tubing and connectors, suction equipment and ventilators, the annex points to a separate STANAG the item itself has to comply with, rather than fixing that technical detail in this document. This page names what Annex A covers rather than reproducing its table; a build against a specific ambulance type should be checked against the annex itself.
Where nations have taken reservations
At this edition's promulgation, Belgium, Canada and Finland each recorded a reservation, covering where a piece of equipment sits within the vehicle, the scope of practice for personnel using a ventilator, and a capability that is only partially fielded pending procurement. The letter of promulgation notes this list may not be the complete current one, and points to the NATO Standardization Documents Database for it.

AMedP-1.14 is a technical design standard for a physical vehicle, not a management-system standard, so meeting it is design and procurement work, not something a piece of software does. What does look like familiar compliance work is the paperwork around that build: a record of which ambulance type a given vehicle is built to, the equipment fit-out drawn up against Annex A for that type, evidence that the gas cylinder, tubing, connector, suction and ventilator items on board separately comply with the STANAGs Annex A cites for them, and a record of any national reservation or added national requirement a customer has layered on top of the minimum. Is AMedP-1.14 mandatory?
It binds NATO nations through STANAG 2872, the agreement recording their commitment to use it, and a nation can add further requirements of its own on top of its minimum. It reaches a vehicle converter or supplier once a contract, tender or national procurement requirement invokes the categorisation or the Annex A minimum requirements, not as a standing obligation on a commercial supplier by itself.
Can a company be "AMedP-1.14 certified"?
No. The document names no certification scheme, accredited body or notified body that assesses a vehicle against it. The nearest thing it describes is a nation recording a reservation against a requirement at the edition's promulgation; how a specific vehicle gets accepted is left to whatever a contract or national procurement process specifies.
How does AMedP-1.14 relate to EN 1789?
AMedP-1.14 draws its four ambulance-type definitions, Type A through Type D, from the civil standard EN 1789:2020, and lists it among its references. It does not state that meeting AMedP-1.14 satisfies EN 1789:2020, or that meeting EN 1789:2020 satisfies AMedP-1.14.
Does AMedP-1.14 cover CBRN-capable ambulances?
No. This edition explicitly excludes CBRN requirements from its scope, since it addresses minimum medical requirements only, and points medical planning for evacuating CBRN patients to other NATO standards instead.
What changed from the previous edition?
The current edition's summary of changes records a new title, a revised and relocated reference list, updated chapter numbering and content, a revised Annex A table, and the removal of the previous Annexes B and C, replaced with references to the supporting standards that now cover that ground.
