What it is
AOP-4526 is the NATO Allied Ordnance Publication that specifies the test requirements and procedures used to provide evidence of how a munition or weapon system responds when it is struck by a shaped charge jet. It is covered by STANAG 4526, the agreement nations use to identify and adopt it, and it exists to support a wider policy: the insensitive munitions (IM) assessment that AOP-39 governs. A test run under this AOP contributes information toward a munition's IM Signature; it is not a standalone qualification, and it does not itself judge whether a munition's response is acceptable. That judgement, and the policy behind it, belongs to AOP-39.
Who this speaks to, and how it binds
AOP-4526 addresses NATO's participating nations and, within them, the National Authority that approves a test item's configuration and has to agree the test directive, test plan and test report before a test is accepted. It also names a responsibility directly: "effort to minimize the violence of the reaction of munitions impacted by a shaped charge jet is a continuing commitment of weapons designers," which puts the outcome the test measures on the people who design the munition, not on a test house alone. There is no supplier or contractor role defined anywhere in the document.
It binds the way an Allied Publication behind a STANAG does: participating nations agree to use its requirements and methods, and "the agreement of nations to use this publication is recorded in STANAG 4526." Any national standard, order, manual or instruction implementing the AOP is expected to reference that STANAG for identification, and no departure from the agreement is permitted without consulting NATO's Tasking Authority. AOP-4526 never mentions a contract or a company; a company meets it when a national insensitive-munitions programme, or a contract that draws on one, calls for a munition's IM Signature under AOP-39 and the shaped charge jet threat is one this has to cover.
What the test involves, at the level this document sets
The test item's own configuration is meant to match the final production standard, or be representative of the life cycle phase the test stands for, subject to the National Authority's approval; the document keeps further guidance on variations to that configuration in a companion reference document rather than repeating it here. Two methods are available for producing the threat: a standard method, using the general guidance the AOP gives directly to represent the most prevalent current threat, and an alternative method built around a fully documented Threat Hazard Assessment for a different threat. Both carry detailed, method-specific requirements for characterising the shaped charge and the jet it produces. That characterisation work is for whoever executes the test; the AOP is a test-execution document, not a design specification, and this page does not walk through the technical requirements themselves.
Documentation, compliance and change control
"A test directive, test plan and test report shall be produced and shall be agreed by the National Authority," and "it is essential that the test is conducted in accordance with the test directive; one of the responsibilities of the Project Team is to confirm compliance." Where a deviation from the agreed test directive, test plan, or the procedure settled at the Trial Readiness Review proves necessary, it has to be approved by the appropriate Project Team representative, taking advice from a safety advisor and technical specialists as needed. National Authorities direct how many tests a munition's assessment needs, and more than one may be required to build the information AOP-39 requires for its IM Signature.
The AOP also sets a minimum set of observations and records every test has to generate: identification of the test item and its configuration, a timeline of events, and photographic and video documentation, compiled so that "a complete data record shall be compiled to include pressure, sound, imagery, fragmentation, debris and propulsion information." The specific instruments, distances and physical arrangements this involves belong to the organisation running the test.
What the AOP does not attempt
The document is explicit about the limits of its own test: it "is only designed to simulate the most violent response that a viable shaped charge jet impact threat would produce," and it does not attempt to reproduce the full range of real-world shaped charge threats. Its annexes go further than this page does: a worked-example annex sets out best-practice test configurations that two nations have already validated, and a historical annex records why this edition, produced by a working group that revised eight related Allied Publications together without changing technical content, replaced older national test methods and withdrew a reference table that could no longer be verified. Both annexes carry technical detail - the charges used, how they were characterised, and their measured performance - that belongs to whoever executes the test, not to a page about what the document is.
How you are evaluated
AOP-4526 creates no certification: nothing in it gives a company, a test facility or a product a credential to hold. What it sets is a chain of approvals around the test itself, run by a National Authority and a Project Team. Whether a munition's response is judged acceptable is decided elsewhere: "policy and procedures for evaluation of test results are given in" AOP-39, so the substantive judgement sits with that policy and the National Authority applying it, not with this test-procedure document.
