STANAG 2401 weapon danger areas for unguided weapons

STANAG 2401 sets a deterministic methodology for working out weapon danger areas for unguided weapons, under the Allied Range Safety Publication ARSP-01. NATO has not released it publicly; this page describes it from the Czech implementation and citing NATO publications.

NATO has not released this STANAG publicly. It is NATO UNCLASSIFIED, and organisations that need it obtain it through their national standardization authority.
What it is
STANAG 2401 is the NATO Standardization Agreement titled Weapon danger areas/zones for unguided weapons - deterministic methodology. Edition 4 was promulgated on 29 February 2024, and its sponsoring committee is recorded as MC, MCLSB, NRS, DSP. It covers ARSP-01 edition B.
NATO has not released STANAG 2401 publicly, so this page describes it from the Czech implementation, ČOS 130009, and from public NATO publications that cite it.
Where it is cited
The Czech defence standards index records ČOS 130009, on danger areas when firing munitions without terminal guidance at ground targets, as implementing STANAG 2401 edition 3 (ARSP-01(B) Vol I and Vol II). Its Czech description says the standard defines basic terms for safety on firing ranges and, above all, the methods and procedures for determining the danger areas in which live firing from barrel weapons and weapon systems takes place.
AAS3P-21 states that "Appropriate testing and analysis shall be performed to assess the Weapon Danger Areas/Zones in accordance with STANAG 2240 and STANAG 2401, Allied Range Safety Publication (ARSP)." AAS3P-22 adds that the field of debris shall be assessed in addition to the Weapon Danger Areas / Zones. AAS3P-23 requires a weapon danger analysis before any live firing test and says "Further guidance may be found in STANAG 2240, STANAG 2401 and Allied Range Safety Publications (ARSP-1 VOL I and ARSP-1 VOL II)."
STANAG 4516, on cannon, lists it as Heavy Weapons Range Safety Criteria and says the range safety assessment "shall be conducted in accordance with STANAG 2401, or national procedures", drawing on burst safety distance, ricochet danger area, toxic contaminants, noise and minimum arming distance. STANAG 4517, written while STANAG 2401 was in draft, left that assessment to national procedures until ratification.
