What it is
STANAG 2523 promulgates AJP-3.5 Edition C, Allied Joint Doctrine for Special Operations. Edition 4 of the agreement was promulgated on 5 May 2026, sponsored by MC, MCJSB, AJOD. NATO marks it NATO UNCLASSIFIED but has not released STANAG 2523 publicly, so this page describes it from public NATO publications that cite it.
Where it is cited
AJP-4.2, Education and training for medical personnel, cites AJP-3.5 (STANAG 2523) twice in its footnotes, each time alongside AMedP-4.13, NATO Special Operations Forces (SOF) Medical Support (STANAG 6541). The first footnote gives the two as an example for a passage about "limited freedom of movement and extended lines of communication", which AJP-4.2 says "may require specific waivers or endorsement by national authorities". The second refers the reader to AJP-3.5 and AMedP-4.13, which, AJP-4.2 says, "outline SOF specific medical support considerations".
Several other public NATO publications, among them AJMedP-1, AJMedP-2, AJMedP-9, STANAG 2546 and STANAG 6514, list STANAG 2523 by title among their related documents without describing its content. AJMedP-2 and AJMedP-9 cite an earlier edition, STANAG 2523 Edition 2 covering AJP-3.5 Edition A.
