NATO has not released this STANAG publicly. It is NATO UNCLASSIFIED, and organisations that need it obtain it through their national standardization authority.
What it is
STANAG 2623 is the NATO Standardization Agreement on military working dog (MWD) capabilities, sponsored by MC, MCLSB, C-IED, MWDEP. Edition 3 was promulgated on 4 March 2025, and it covers the publication AMWDP-01, edition C.
NATO has not released STANAG 2623 publicly, so this page describes it from AEP-4296, a public NATO publication that cites it.
Where it is cited
AEP-4296 mentions STANAG 2623 in a national reservation recorded by Turkey (TUR). The entry states that "Turkish Armed Forces has 7 of 10 Military Working Dog categories which mentioned in Annex-B of STANAG 2623", and names these: "These are Mine Detection Dog, Explosive Detection Dog, Patrol Dog, Drug Detection Dog and Tracker Dog." It adds that "Mine Detection Dog also serves as Improvised Explosive Device Detection Dog."
The same entry records that "Explosive Detection Dog cannot be used for route search" and that "MWD teams are being regularly certificated once a year by subject." These are Turkey's national statements, not NATO's text. What they show about the agreement itself is that Annex B of STANAG 2623 defines ten military working dog categories.
