What it is
STANAG 2651 is the NATO agreement covering ATP-3.2.2.1, Land Symbology and Related Terminology, edition A. Edition 1 was promulgated on 13 May 2024 under committee MC, MCLSB, LO. NATO marks it NATO UNCLASSIFIED but has not released it publicly, so this page describes it from a public NATO publication that cites it.
Where it is cited
APP-06 (Edition E Version 2), a public NATO publication, cites STANAG 2651 - ATP-3.2.2.1 Land Symbology and Related Terminology in a footnote to its Table 1-8, Echelon (Field B). The footnote says the agreement "Provides additional information related to the different levels of echelons."
The echelon entries APP-06 lists in that table include the army group, which APP-06 defines as "The largest formation of land forces, normally comprising two or more armies or army corps under a designated commander", and the theatre of operations, which it defines as "A designated area, which may include one or more joint operations areas." These definitions are APP-06's own. APP-06 points to STANAG 2651 and ATP-3.2.2.1 for further detail on the echelon levels, and gives no other description of their content.
