What it is
STANAG 2836 is the NATO Standardization Agreement on removable paints for camouflage. Edition 3, promulgated in July 1996, sponsored by NATO's CNAD, AC/225 NAAG, MILENG, MatP. NATO has not released STANAG 2836 publicly. This page describes it from a public national implementation, the Czech defence standard ČOS 108008 (2nd edition, amendment 1, effective 2020), which states that it introduces STANAG 2836 edition 3 into Czech use. A national implementation can add national requirements and reservations, so treat what follows as the Czech implementation's content, not as NATO's own text.
What the Czech implementation requires of a temporary camouflage paint
ČOS 108008 sets the minimum quality level for easily removable, temporary camouflage paints applied as an overcoat on the existing paintwork of military or civilian objects and equipment, to give a fast, temporary change of signature matched to the surrounding environment. It defines two types: Type A, a paint removable with water, with or without additives, supplied as a water-soluble powder, a ready water emulsion, or a mixture with a solvent; and Type B, a paint removable with thinner or alcohol. Colour and spectral reflectance must meet the specifications of AEP-31 and ČOS 108016. A dry Type A coat must keep good adhesion to the substrate even after exposure to frost, hail, and scratching by deciduous or coniferous vegetation for at least one month, and after drying and curing it must withstand snow and rain for at least one month without serious deterioration; Type B must withstand rain and seawater for at least three months. Type A must be removable with water containing mildly alkaline detergents and a pressurised water spray, with brushing if needed; Type B must be removable with a low-aromatic thinner or with added ethyl alcohol. The paint must be applicable by brush, roller or spray, within an ambient, surface and paint temperature range of 1°C to 40°C for Type A or -10°C to 40°C for Type B. The coating must contain no lead compounds or hexavalent chromium compounds, must not irritate skin on direct contact, and each container must carry the safety precautions for the chemicals and solvents it contains.
The technical conditions each paint must meet
ČOS 108008 sets numeric test conditions against named test methods: specular gloss at 60 degrees (ISO 2813) of at most 3; hiding power (ISO 2814) of 98% at a dry film thickness of (100 plus or minus 10) micrometres; fineness of grind (ISO 1524) of at most 50 micrometres; a wet coat equivalent to (100 plus or minus 10) micrometres of dry film surface-dry within one hour (ISO 1517); adhesion (ISO 2409) on a (50 plus or minus 5) micrometre steel coat, cross-cut test with 6 cuts 1 mm apart, classified at most 2; elasticity (ISO 1519, cylindrical mandrel bend) of at most 15 mm; scrub resistance (apparatus to ASTM D-2486) with no visible colour change after 30 double strokes under water 1 mm above the coated surface, air dried; storage stability of at least two years in cans at 0°C to 40°C, meeting the standard's requirements again after light stirring; and, on removal, an undamaged substrate, with any colour change to an underlying camouflage coating caused by application and removal kept under 2 CIELAB units.
