What it is

STANAG 4375 is a NATO Standardization Agreement, currently Edition 4, dated 17 July 2024. It is not a technical specification. It is the agreement by which NATO nations commit to accept and implement Allied Ordnance Publication AOP-4375, Edition A, the document that actually sets out safety drop test procedures for munitions. Read on its own, STANAG 4375 names no drop height, no drop orientation and no pass or fail threshold - that detail lives inside AOP-4375, not inside this letter of promulgation. Its own text frames the point plainly: participating nations agree "that AOP-4375 provides a suitable basis for assessing the reaction, if any, of munitions systems to accidental drops."

Who it binds, and how

STANAG 4375 binds nations, not organisations directly. Its implementation clause says the STANAG "is considered implemented when a nation has updated its national policy regarding safety drop testing of munitions to incorporate the tests of AOP-4375." Ratification and implementation are separate steps, and the document invites nations that have not yet reported their position to "advise the NSO of their intention regarding its ratification and implementation." So "is STANAG 4375 mandatory" has no single answer: it depends on whether a given nation has ratified and implemented it, and, for a supplier, on whether a specific contract or tender names AOP-4375 as a result.

What the agreement actually commits nations to

Under "Agreement," participating nations agree to implement AOP-4375, Edition A. Under "Implementation of the agreement," ratifying nations are required to update their national munition drop-testing policy to be in accordance with AOP-4375, update their national drop-testing procedures and guidance to reflect what AOP-4375 gives, and update their national drop-testing documentation to incorporate AOP-4375's own definitions. Allies and NATO bodies must then report implementation details through NATO's electronic reporting tool, and partner nations are invited to do the same. None of this is written as a duty on a supplier; every duty in the text runs to "nations" or "ratifying nations."

A cover agreement, not the test method

The distinction matters because a reader who only has STANAG 4375 in hand does not yet have a test procedure to work to. The stated aim is "to accept the Allied Ordnance Publication AOP-4375 which enables nations to collaborate in effectively implementing and conducting safety drop testing of munitions" - everything a test engineer needs sits inside that acceptance, not in the promulgation letter itself. STANAG 4375 supersedes Edition 3, dated 15 June 2010.

What it does not cover

STANAG 4375 names no assessment or certification scheme of its own. Its only stated check is that the STANAG itself "is to be reviewed in accordance with AAP-03," a periodic review of whether the agreement is still current, recorded in the NSDD, not an audit of any organisation or product. The cover also names two related documents that sit alongside the agreement rather than inside it: STANAG 4297, covering the assessment of safety and suitability for service of non-nuclear munitions (AOP-15), and STANAG 4370, covering environmental testing (AECTP-100 to AECTP-600). Neither is a requirement of STANAG 4375; both are pointers to standards a munitions programme is likely to meet alongside it.

Is STANAG 4375 mandatory?
