What it is

STANAG 4525 is the NATO Standardization Agreement that sets one procedure for measuring the coefficient of linear thermal expansion of explosive materials, and one format for reporting what a test found. Edition 1 was promulgated on 25 October 2001 and remains the current edition. Like a small number of other STANAGs in the same family, it carries its technical content directly rather than pointing to a separate Allied Publication: it states its own "Related Documents: None", and its two annexes, Annex A (test procedures) and Annex B (data exchange format), are the specification itself.

Why a common test method matters

The agreement's own aim is "to standardize the measurement of the coefficient of linear thermal expansion for explosive materials", so that every participating nation has a uniform test and, with it, the information as to how a reported figure was obtained. That second half matters as much as the first: a thermal-expansion figure is only useful if the nation reading it knows how it was produced. Without a shared procedure and a shared reporting format, a result from one country's laboratory cannot safely be compared with another's.

Who ratifies it, and how it reaches a test facility

STANAG 4525 binds the NATO nations that ratify it, recorded in the NATO Standardization Document Database, and each ratifying nation implements it by issuing its own instructions: the agreement "is considered implemented by a nation when that nation has issued the necessary instructions putting the contents of this agreement into effect." Ratifying nations are also expected to reference the STANAG number in the national orders, manuals or instructions that carry it forward. Participating nations agree, in the Agreement clause, to use the Annex A procedure and to report data using the Annex B format. In practice, that reaches a test facility or a contractor's own test department the way any STANAG reaches a supplier: through national implementation and a contract or a national requirement, not automatically.

What the test procedure and data exchange format cover

Annex A sets out what the method is for: determining the coefficient of linear thermal expansion of solid materials. It also says plainly what the method is not for: it is not the preferred way to determine the Glass Transition Temperature. Beyond the scope, it defines linear thermal expansion and the coefficient that expresses it, and it covers requirements for the test apparatus, the specimen, the test method itself, how the results are reduced, and cautions to observe while testing. None of that detail belongs on this page: the annex is where the apparatus, specimen and procedural requirements actually live, and a test facility working to this STANAG needs to read them directly rather than take them from a summary.

Annex B is a standard form, with an accompanying instruction sheet, for recording a test: test site information, test conditions, specimen information, and the resulting values, cross-referenced to the NATO AOP-7 Data Exchange Format, against test procedure number 102.01.060 for Thermomechanical Analysis. It fixes what gets recorded and how, not what counts as an acceptable result: the document sets no acceptance limit of its own.

What a report under STANAG 4525 establishes

A completed Annex B report, filled in against the Annex A procedure, is what this STANAG produces. It establishes that a stated measurement was made on a stated material under a stated set of conditions, using a defined procedure and a common terminology, so the figures in it can be trusted and compared by whoever receives them. What it does not establish is whether those figures meet any particular requirement. Judging that is for whoever set the requirement, not for the STANAG.

The document's own "Related Documents" field reads "None", but three NATO references appear in the text: AAP-6, NATO's glossary of standardization terms, is where the Explanatory Notes take their definitions of ratification, implementation and reservation from; AAP-4, NATO's index of standardization agreements, is what the promulgation letter directs be amended to reflect this STANAG's status; and the NATO AOP-7 Data Exchange Format is the reference Annex B's report is built against. Is STANAG 4525 mandatory?

Only through ratification and national implementation. A nation ratifies STANAG 4525 and implements it by issuing its own instructions; it reaches a supplier or test facility once a contract, tender, or national requirement specifically calls for a report produced under this procedure, not automatically because the STANAG exists.

Can a company be certified to STANAG 4525?

No. The document names no certification or accreditation scheme. It fixes a test procedure and a reporting format that a test facility follows; the resulting report is reviewed by whoever it is sent to, not audited by an accredited body against a management system.

Does STANAG 4525 set pass or fail limits for the test?

No. It standardises how the measurement is made and how the result is recorded, so a figure from one nation's test means the same thing when another nation reads it. Whether a result meets any particular requirement is judged by whoever set that requirement, not by the STANAG itself.

What is the difference between Annex A and Annex B?
