What it is
STANAG 4754 is NATO's standardization agreement for the NATO Generic Vehicle Architecture (NGVA), the open interface architecture that lets land vehicle platforms exchange electronic data, video and power across a common set of interfaces instead of each integration being built bespoke. The STANAG itself carries no interface specification: it is the ratified commitment nations make to implement AEP-4754, the Allied Engineering Publication where the actual NGVA requirements are written down. That distinction matters more than anything else on this page. A nation ratifies the STANAG; a supplier meets NGVA when a contract, tender or national requirements document actually invokes AEP-4754, and only to the extent that document specifies.
What nations agree to
Ratifying the STANAG commits a nation to implement AEP-4754, Volumes I, IV, VII and VIII at Edition A and Volumes II, III, V and VI at Edition B. Beyond that commitment, ratifying nations agree to three practical things: reference the STANAG number in the national orders, manuals and instructions that put it into effect, so the origin is traceable; apply it to future land vehicle platforms and sub-systems as well as current refurbishment and upgrade programmes, so an in-service vehicle is not exempt; and route any proposed change through the same control authority and process as the original agreement. Nations, and NATO bodies, report their implementation details through NATO's electronic reporting tool. Partner nations outside NATO membership are invited to do the same, on a voluntary footing.
Scope: the platform as a system
NGVA addresses land vehicle platforms, ranging from simple to complex implementations. Its requirements are driven by the functionality of the vehicle platform as a whole system, including every sub-system, not by scoring the automotive or power elements on their own. That scope covers both equipment fitted from initial operating capability and equipment added throughout the platform's life, so a mid-life upgrade can bring a vehicle into scope just as a new build does.
How it reaches a supplier
A STANAG binds the nation that ratifies it, not a supplier directly. The interface requirements a supplier actually has to meet live in whichever national system requirements document or sub-system requirements document a programme writes, once that programme has been told to build to NGVA. In practice that means the trigger is a tender or a contract, not the STANAG's existence: it is written into what a nation asks for, and it is too late to redesign a platform's data and power architecture around it once the platform is built.
Editions, volumes and what changed
This is Edition 3, dated 30 October 2024. It adds a new Volume VIII, submitted for ratification, while Volumes I, IV and VII stay at Edition A and Volumes II, III, V and VI stay at Edition B, unchanged. Edition 3 supersedes Edition 2, dated 3 February 2023. The STANAG is reviewed against NATO's standardization procedure, AAP-03, with the result recorded in NATO's Standardization Document Database (NSDD).
How it is evaluated
There is no certification scheme for NGVA or for this STANAG. What the document describes is national ratification and implementation reporting: nations record their ratification response in the NSDD and report implementation details through the electronic reporting tool. No accredited body, notified body or NATO certification scheme assesses a vehicle platform against it. Where the phrase "NGVA compliant" gets used in industry, it is shorthand for meeting whatever AEP-4754 volumes a specific contract invoked, verified however that contract's own acceptance process says, not a certificate this STANAG issues.
