What it is
AAEP-01, the Allied Aircraft Electric and Electromagnetic Considerations Publication on ground recharging of aircraft main batteries, is NATO's standard procedure for recharging the two battery chemistries fitted to allied aircraft: lead-acid, in sealed and vented variants, and nickel-cadmium. It is addressed directly to aircraft maintenance and servicing personnel, and it is covered by STANAG 3454, the agreement by which nations commit to Allied Publications of this kind rather than a separate technical layer on top of it. Edition B, version 1 was promulgated in September 2022.
A fallback procedure, not the default one
AAEP-01 is explicit about its own place in the order of things. Where a battery's own manufacturer recharging instructions are available and the servicing crew is already familiar with that battery, those instructions apply. AAEP-01's own procedure exists for the case those instructions are not to hand, or the crew has not been trained on that particular battery. A maintenance organisation reading this standard is therefore reading a safety net, not a replacement for the manufacturer's own guidance.
Who it addresses, and how it binds
The document speaks to aircraft maintenance and servicing personnel, not to a manufacturer or a national authority. It binds through national implementation rather than by itself: a nation is considered to have implemented it once that nation's own maintenance procedures have been updated and its aircraft maintenance personnel are able to act according to its details. The Record of Reservations pages that open the document show that implementation is not uniform. Individual nations record exceptions against particular clauses, which is how national divergence from a common NATO text is tracked in practice.
Two battery types, two charging methods
The standard recognises two battery chemistries used in aircraft main batteries, lead-acid (sealed and vented) and nickel-cadmium, and treats each with its own procedure because the servicing steps differ. Recharging itself is done by one of two methods, a constant-current method or a constant-potential method, and either may be used depending on the facilities available. The specific voltage, current and timing values for each method and battery combination sit in the document's annexes; they are setpoints for the person doing the charging, not facts about what the standard covers, and this page does not reproduce them.
Standing requirements rather than a procedure
Separate from the charging methods, AAEP-01 sets a small number of requirements that apply generally rather than as a sequence of steps. It recommends an ambient temperature of 16-30°C (60-90°F) for recharging aircraft main batteries (clause 1.2), requires that only de-ionised or distilled water be used wherever water is added during servicing (clause 1.2), requires that the tools used match the battery's electrolyte type (clause 1.2), and sets standing safety conditions for the charging area itself (clause 2.2): good ventilation, because explosive gases can be released during recharging, no open flames, and controls against electrical arcing and sparking. These are the kind of facts that describe what the standard is about; the type-specific cleaning, state-of-charge and water-topping procedures that follow them in the document are handling instructions for a servicing crew to follow from the document itself, not something reproduced here.
How it is checked
AAEP-01 names no certification, audit or inspection mechanism, and no body is described as checking compliance against it. The only test the document itself states is its own definition of implementation: a nation has updated its procedures and its maintenance personnel can act according to the standard's details. There is no accredited certification body, government surveillance arrangement, or notified-body assessment attached to this document.
