What it is
What AAGSP-01 covers
AAGSP-01 is the NATO Allied Aircraft Gaseous Systems Publication that sets the shared characteristics of nitrogen, and of the ground servicing equipment used to supply it, so that one nation's ground crew can cross-service another nation's aircraft or air-launched missiles. STANAG 3624 is the agreement that gives it force: a nation ratifies that STANAG, and AAGSP-01 is the technical text nations then apply. It covers two grades of nitrogen and the purity and contamination limits they must meet, a minimum charging pressure, the charging hoses and ground servicing equipment used for both gaseous and liquid nitrogen, and the connectors used for each, down to the physical dimensions the liquid connector has to meet.
How it comes to bind
AAGSP-01 binds through STANAG 3624 rather than by existing on its own: a nation implements STANAG 3624 domestically, and for a supplier the obligation usually arrives as a national specification or a contract for ground servicing equipment, or for the nitrogen supplied under one, that names AAGSP-01. What makes this document unusual among Allied Publications is that it carries its own formal record of reservations, rather than leaving that to the covering STANAG: seven nations have recorded one, each changing how far the document applies to them.
What it requires, clause by clause
Chapter 2 sets minimum purity and impurity limits for two nitrogen grades, referred to Annex A; a particulate matter limit that differs between gaseous and liquid product; a requirement that oil-free nitrogen come from a production method designed to keep out pollution rather than be filtered afterwards; and a minimum charging pressure, with a distinct, higher figure carved out only for equipment supporting the Netherlands' EPU. It sets the gaseous charging hose's pressure rating and maximum length, and requires the ground servicing equipment to control the maximum delivery pressure and to carry a filter against contamination from cylinders and other transfer systems. For liquid service, it sets a service pressure the storage tanks and transfer hoses must withstand, a minimum hose length for handling, and a minimum transfer rate for the combined equipment, hose and connector.
Participating nations agree to adopt a specific range of gaseous connectors specified in ISO 1023, and to use the connector illustrated in Annex B for liquid nitrogen replenishment, which must additionally mate satisfactorily with the aircraft's own connector and be positioned so ground crew can make the connection while wearing protective gloves. Annex A carries the purity, oxygen, moisture, hydrocarbon and odour limits for the two grades, with a genuinely unusual note attached: the lower grade, in gas form, may be used to purge oxygen systems but must not be used to pressurize struts or tires unless check valves are fitted, to stop contamination or the backflow of oil-tolerant gas into oil-free equipment. Annex B sets the connector's physical dimensions, including its engagement slot depth and mating pin clearance, and Annex C records the charging pressure actually available at each participating nation's ground facilities, a range the document itself shows is wide across the alliance. None of these figures are reproduced here; they are what the document itself is for.
The reservations are the practical detail
Seven nations carry a recorded reservation, and together they matter more to a supplier than any single clause. Canada's air-launched missile systems generate their own nitrogen and so are exempted from the liquid-service ground equipment, storage tank and connector clauses and figure, using instead the 1974 edition of ISO 1023's connector for gaseous delivery. France has no Grade E nitrogen, only the lower grade. Greece can supply only the lower grade, oil-free, at a reduced maximum pressure at one specific training wing, cannot supply liquid nitrogen at all, and has one combat wing whose in-service filter does not meet the required specification. Italy applies the document only to new-design equipment going forward. Montenegro considers its existing nitrogen bottle capacity, purity and pressure sufficient for its own use. Slovenia treats the requirements as a desirable target for future acquisitions rather than an obligation to retrofit aircraft it has already procured, given its reliance on foreign manufacturers. The United States has reserved against the Annex A characteristics table and several clauses, because its Navy and Marine Corps do not supply liquid nitrogen for aircraft servicing and its Air Force does not routinely use the higher nitrogen grade.
How it is assessed
AAGSP-01 names no certification or assessment scheme, and no accredited body, notified body or self-declaration mechanism appears anywhere in the text. It is a technical characteristics document: conformity in practice is whatever the procuring or accepting organisation checks equipment or nitrogen against before use, and, in service, whether a cross-servicing connection to another nation's aircraft actually succeeds. The reservations above make the point directly - meeting AAGSP-01 is a nation-specific fact, not a single pass or fail that a third party certifies.
