AEP-4050 symbols for military vehicle controls

Whoever designs or specifies the control labelling of a military vehicle for a nation using this recommendation

What it is

What AEP-4050 governs

AEP-4050 is the NATO Allied Engineering Publication that recommends standardized symbols for the function of controls in military vehicles - the icon next to a switch, button or lever that tells whoever operates it what it does. It does not set out to invent a symbol set: "the majority of such symbols will be found in civil standards, notably ISO standards 2575 and 7000 and SAE - J2402", and AEP-4050 lists those civil symbols, for reference, in its Annex B. Where a function is particular to a military vehicle and has no civil-standard equivalent, AEP-4050 supplies its own symbols in Annex A. Nations record their agreement to use the publication in STANREC 4050, a recommendation rather than a ratified commitment: nations are invited to use AEP-4050, not bound to it the way a STANAG binds a nation that ratifies it.

Annex A: symbols particular to military vehicles

For functions with no civil-standard symbol, AEP-4050 sets out its own: bilge pump, black out (B.O.), blackout driving lamp, convoy blackout marker, high beam flashing, hydraulics, infra red, master caution, master warning, ramp control (open/close) in separate tracked and wheeled vehicle versions, and slave receptacle. Each entry fixes a name, where the symbol is placed on or next to the control it labels, and who is expected to monitor it. Every one of these is monitored by the driver except infra red and the slave receptacle, which the whole crew is expected to watch.

Annex B: symbols already covered by civil standards

The longer list is everyday vehicle controls where a civil symbol already exists: air-conditioning, battery, choke, clutch, diesel engine pre-heat, differential lock (side-by-side and through), the automatic-transmission indicators drive, neutral, park and reverse, engine shut-off, engine start, fresh air, fuel, hand throttle, high beam, interior heating, low beam, night vision, recirculated air, ventilating fan, winch, and windscreen demisting and wiping. AEP-4050 does not redefine any of these; it points to ISO 2575, ISO 7000 or SAE J2402 for the symbol itself and lists the function so a reader can find the right one.

What it does not cover

AEP-4050 sets no design process, no acceptance test, and no inspection or audit cycle for checking that a delivered vehicle actually carries the right symbols. It is a reference list, not a management-system or acceptance standard, and it names no certification body or assessment scheme: verifying a vehicle's labelling is a property of whatever acceptance process a customer's contract applies, not of AEP-4050 itself.

Is AEP-4050 mandatory?

Not by itself. Nations record their agreement to use it in STANREC 4050, a recommendation rather than the ratified commitment a STANAG carries, so nations are invited to use AEP-4050 rather than bound to it. Whether a given vehicle programme has to follow it comes down to what the relevant contract or national specification requires.

What is the difference between AEP-4050 and STANREC 4050?

STANREC 4050 is the record of nations' recommendation to use the NATO symbol scheme for military vehicle controls. AEP-4050 is the Allied Publication that actually contains the symbols, split between Annex A (symbols particular to military vehicles) and Annex B (symbols already covered by civil standards).

Which civil standards does AEP-4050 rely on?

Three: ISO 2575 and ISO 7000, and SAE J2402, all covering symbols for controls, indicators and tell-tales on road vehicles. AEP-4050 lists these for reference in Annex B rather than repeating their content, and adds its own symbols in Annex A only where military vehicles need something civil standards do not cover.

Can ComplyTrain get us AEP-4050 certified?

No such certification exists. AEP-4050 names no accredited body, notified body, or audit scheme, and describes no organisation being assessed against it. It is a reference list of symbols, not a standard a vehicle or a company is certified against.
