STANAG 4009
Manufacturers of military tractors, semi-trailers and their kingpin couplings, and the buyers who specify them for NATO interoperability.
STANAG 4009 sets out the interface geometry, including kingpin dimensions, that lets tractors and semi-trailers from different NATO nations connect. NATO has not released it publicly; this page describes it from the Czech defence standard that implements it.
NATO has not released this STANAG publicly. It is NATO UNCLASSIFIED, and organisations that need it obtain it through their national standardization authority.
STANAG 4009 is the NATO Standardization Agreement on interface geometry for tractors and semi-trailers. Edition 3, promulgated in April 2022 under NATO's CNAD, AC/225 NAAG land engineering group (LCGLE), covers the publication AEP-4009 edition A. Its purpose is interoperability: a tractor from one NATO nation must be able to couple to a semi-trailer from another.
NATO has not released STANAG 4009 publicly, so this page describes it from a public national implementation, the Czech defence standard ČOS 235003 (1st edition, amendment 1, 2022), which states that it introduces STANAG 4009 edition 3 and AEP-4009 edition A, version 1, into Czech use. A national implementation can add national requirements, so treat what follows as the Czech implementation's content, not as NATO's own text.
ČOS 235003 standardises the geometry of the interface surface between tractors and semi-trailers so that they can be interconnected across NATO's allied forces in any region. For tractors, the standardised dimensions are the height and position of the fifth-wheel coupling, and the ratio between the cab and the rear of the chassis relative to that coupling. For semi-trailers, they are the kingpin size, the height and position of the kingpin, the gooseneck geometry, and the semi-trailer's angular displacement relative to the tractor. The standard is organised in three parts: kingpins, tractors and semi-trailers used for logistics support of military operations, and military tractors and semi-trailers.
For kingpins, the basic mounting dimensions are taken from two international standards: ISO 337 type 50 (50.8 mm / 2.0 in diameter) and ISO 4086 type 90 (89 mm / 3.5 in diameter). Which type applies depends on a coupling force, Fh, defined in ISO 8717 section 4: above 108 kN a type 90 kingpin is required, at or below it either a type 90 or a type 50 kingpin may be used. For tractors and semi-trailers used in logistics support of military operations, the Czech implementation adopts the whole of ISO 1726. For military tractors and semi-trailers, it sets its own interface geometry in an annex: a table of dimensions, among them a tractor coupling height of 1,550 mm to 1,650 mm depending on load and a semi-trailer front height of up to 1,355 mm, plus a set of angles, and the gooseneck's outline, built from straight sections joined by two circular arcs of radius R.
A supplier bound by STANAG 4009 through a contract holds the obtained text through its national authority. In ComplyTrain you record the requirements that apply to you as your own requirements, give each an owner, and keep the evidence that shows you meet them against each one.
Tell us how you need to work with STANAG 4009 and what you need from it. We will come back to you about what ComplyTrain can do.

The EDF consortium rule is usually quoted as three entities from three Member States. It has a second limb about control that the word independent quietly hides, and two exceptions that disapply it entirely.
