What AASSEP-14 standardises
AASSEP-14 is a NATO Allied Aircraft Servicing and Standard Equipment Publication (AASSEP) - engineering agreements NATO nations use to make ground-support equipment for aircraft interchangeable. Edition A, Version 1 was promulgated in February 2025. It standardises three things: the ground-test connection for a pressurised aircraft cabin, which must conform to the existing civil standard ISO 11:1987; the canopy seal inflation connection; and the test pressure gauge connection. Alongside the connections themselves, it fixes the access clearance a ground crew needs to reach them. The point of all three is cross-servicing: an aircraft built or operated by one NATO nation can be tested, pressurised and inspected using another nation's standard ground equipment, without a bespoke adapter built for that airframe alone.

Who it binds, and when
AASSEP-14 is addressed to NATO nations, not to a supplier directly. It becomes live for a nation once that nation has issued its own instructions that future aircraft and cabin air conditioning equipment will be built to it, so the document reaches a manufacturer through a national procurement specification or a tender, not by existing on its own. That makes it a design-stage matter: the connections are cheapest to include when an aircraft or its ground test equipment is first specified, and expensive to retrofit once the design is fixed.
The national reservations recorded against this edition are a useful check on how far that reach actually goes. Finland and Slovenia both reserve the right to leave equipment they have already procured as it is, rather than modify it to match. Slovenia adds that meeting the standard on future procurements depends on whether its manufacturers, who are all foreign, are able to comply with it. Greece notes that several of its current aircraft and helicopter types are not compatible with the related standard STANAG 2215 Edition 9, an interoperability point AASSEP-14 itself does not raise. None of this makes the standard optional where a contract invokes it; it shows where nations have chosen not to apply it retroactively.
What a supplier actually builds
Two separate requirements sit inside AASSEP-14, and they are easy to conflate. The pressurised aircraft's own ground-test connection has to conform to ISO 11:1987, a civil aviation standard for ground pressure testing connections on pressure cabins, so it couples with any nation's standard ground pressurising equipment. The canopy seal inflation connection and the test pressure gauge connection are AASSEP-14's own specification: each is a defined tubing and thread size, set out in Annex A's drawing rather than described in the clause text. A design or procurement record showing conformance to that drawing, and to ISO 11:1987 for the pressurised-cabin connection, is what a customer or an internal audit will ask to see.
A separate clause on defence against terrorism sits alongside the connection requirements: the equipment has to be labelled, processed and stored so it cannot be accessed or tampered with by unauthorised people, inspected and certified before use, and serviced or maintained only by authorised personnel. It is a handling and access-control requirement, not a technical property of the connection itself.
How conformance is checked
AASSEP-14 names no certifying body and no accreditation scheme. It does require the equipment to be inspected and certified before use, but that is a check on the physical item, comparable to an airworthiness or serviceability check, not a credential an organisation can hold. In practice, whether a delivered aircraft or piece of ground equipment meets AASSEP-14 is something the procuring nation checks at acceptance, against Annex A's drawing and against ISO 11:1987, rather than something assessed by a third party.

Is AASSEP-14 mandatory?
