What it is

STANAG 3209 is the NATO Standardization Agreement covering tyre valve couplings, under which participating nations agree to implement AASSEP-4, Edition A. This is Edition 6, promulgated 21 October 2014, superseding Edition 5 of the same STANAG.

A STANAG is not the specification

A STANAG is the agreement by which NATO nations commit to implement a standard, not the technical specification itself. STANAG 3209's own text is short and administrative: an aim, one interoperability requirement, and the ratification, implementation and review machinery. The coupling requirements themselves are not written here; the STANAG names the publication that carries them, "AASSEP-4, Edition A", which participating nations "agree to implement". Anyone actually designing, manufacturing or checking a tyre valve coupling against those requirements needs AASSEP-4's own text, not this cover agreement.

What it commits nations to

The stated aim is interoperability. The single interoperability requirement is "to standardize tyre valve couplings to facilitate cross-servicing of aircraft" - so that ground crews from one NATO nation can service the tyres of another nation's aircraft with common equipment. The document also lists three civil standards under "Other Related Documents": ISO 4570 (tyre valve threads), ISO 7295 (tyre valves for aircraft, interchangeability dimensions), and ISO 20562 (tyre valves, ISO core chambers).

Who it binds, and how

STANAG 3209 binds nations, not suppliers. It is "effective upon receipt and ready to be used by the implementing nations and NATO bodies", and it becomes binding on a given nation through ratification, which NATO records in the NATO Standardization Document Database (NSDD). Partner nations are not asked to ratify in the same way; they "are invited to adopt this STANAG". Implementation is a further, separate step: the STANAG "is considered implemented when the provisions specified therein have been included in the national documentation concerned with reference to STANAG 3209". Nations then report that implementation using a NATO reporting form, and partner nations report adoption on a separate form. A supplier meets STANAG 3209, or the AASSEP-4 requirements it covers, only where a contract or a nation's own procurement documentation says so - the document itself sets no obligation reaching a supplier directly, and prints no NATO-wide effective date of its own beyond "effective upon receipt".

How it's evaluated

STANAG 3209 describes no certification scheme and no audit. What it describes is nations reporting their ratification and implementation status to NATO for the record; nobody is "STANAG 3209 certified", and the document never uses that language. Where a manufacturer's tyre valve coupling does get checked against AASSEP-4's requirements, the assessor and the evidence required are set by the contract's own quality clause, not by this STANAG.

STANAG 3209 covers AASSEP-04, the Allied publication that carries the actual coupling requirements. Nations report their implementation of this STANAG using forms carried in AAP-03, which informs the reporting mechanism rather than the technical content. Its "Other Related Documents" also name three ISO standards, ISO 4570, ISO 7295 and ISO 20562, which sit outside our catalogue.

Is STANAG 3209 mandatory?

Only where a nation has ratified and implemented it, and it reaches a supplier only where a contract or procurement document invokes it. The STANAG itself sets no date that applies to everyone; each nation reports its own ratification and implementation timing to NATO.

What is the difference between STANAG 3209 and AASSEP-4?
