What it is

STANAG 3372 is a NATO Standardization Agreement, currently Edition 7, dated 5 November 2014. It is not a technical specification. It is the agreement by which NATO nations commit to implement AASSEP-06, Edition A, the Allied Publication that carries the essential dimensions, functional configuration and minimum clearances for the connectors it covers. The document's own aim is to respond to an interoperability requirement: "to define the essential dimensions, functional configuration and minimum clearances for electrical connectors associated with low pressure air engine starting." Read on its own, STANAG 3372 requires nothing of a supplier or contractor. Its obligations run to nations and to NATO's own bodies, and the connector detail sits in AASSEP-06, not in this cover.

Who it binds, and how

STANAG 3372 is explicit that it binds nations rather than organisations. Its letter of promulgation describes the enclosed agreement as one "which has been ratified by member nations, as reflected in the NATO Standardization Document Database (NSDD), is promulgated herewith." Under "Agreement," participating nations agree to implement AASSEP-06, Edition A - a national commitment, made by ratification, not a duty a supplier signs up to by reading this document. Ratification and implementation are kept separate: nations that have not yet examined their position are invited to advise the NSO of their intention regarding its implementation. So "is STANAG 3372 mandatory" has no single answer: it depends on whether a given nation has ratified and implemented it, and this cover names no supplier, manufacturer or contractor at all.

What the agreement commits nations to

The interoperability requirement STANAG 3372 responds to is defining "the essential dimensions, functional configuration and minimum clearances for electrical connectors associated with low pressure air engine starting." The STANAG states it "is effective upon receipt and ready to be used by the implementing nations and NATO bodies," and "STANAG 3372, Edition 7, is considered implemented when the provisions specified therein have been included in the national documentation concerned with reference to STANAG 3372." That is national and procedural machinery: a nation records its own reference to STANAG 3372 in its documentation once AASSEP-06 is in place, not a design or delivery obligation placed directly on a contractor. Partner nations are separately invited to adopt the STANAG.

A cover agreement, not the connector specification itself

A reader who only has STANAG 3372 in hand does not yet have the dimensions, configuration or clearances it points to. That sits in AASSEP-06, Edition A, and this page does not repeat it. STANAG 3372 also names one other related document: ISO 2026, a civil standard on aircraft connections for starting engines by air, listed as related reading rather than as something the agreement itself covers. Edition 7, dated 5 November 2014, supersedes an earlier edition of STANAG 3372.

Reporting and review

National decisions on ratification and implementation are provided to the NSO, and the responses are recorded in the NATO Standardization Document Database. Nations are invited to report their effective implementation using the form in Annex H to AAP-03(J); partner nations are separately invited to report their adoption using the form in Annex G to AAP-03(J). The STANAG itself is reviewed at least once every three years, with the outcome recorded in the NSDD, and nations and NATO bodies may propose changes at any time for the tasking authority to process during that review. The agreement is supervised under the authority of NATO's Military Committee Air Standardization Board (MCASB), through the Aircraft Servicing and Standard Equipment working group. The custodian of the STANAG is Canada.

What it does not cover

STANAG 3372 names no dimension, configuration or clearance value of its own - that detail sits entirely in AASSEP-06. It also names no assessment or certification scheme: the only stated check is that the STANAG itself is reviewed periodically, not that a nation, an organisation or an individual is certified.
