STANAG 7212
National authorities and NATO bodies ratifying and implementing an aerospace medicine programme under AAMedP-01
STANAG 7212 is NATO's agreement for nations to implement AAMedP-01 aerospace medicine doctrine, tracked through ratification and self-reported implementation rather than certification.
STANAG 7212 is the NATO standardization agreement that brings AAMedP-01, Edition B, into force. It is not itself a technical standard: the aerospace medicine doctrine lives in AAMedP-01, and the STANAG's job is to record that participating nations have agreed to implement that publication. This is Edition 2, promulgated 11 September 2025, superseding Edition 1 of 15 December 2016. Its stated purpose is to provide strategic guidance on requirements for an aerospace medicine programme in NATO nations.
Participating nations agree to implement AAMedP-01, Edition B. Nations examine their own ratification of the STANAG and advise NATO's Standardization Office of their ratification and implementation intentions, and responses are recorded in the NATO Standardization Documents Database. AAMedP-01 is considered implemented once "the entity has updated its policies, procedures and training of its aeromedical program and personnel and they are able to act according to the provision of the present standard." That is an organisational bar, not a one-off inspection: a nation or NATO body reports the details through NATO's electronic reporting tool once its own programme meets it. The agreement sets no NATO Effective Date of its own, so timing runs on each nation's ratification and implementation rather than a fixed calendar date.
The agreement is supervised under NATO's Military Committee, through the Air Standardization Board and its aeromedical working group. It is reviewed in accordance with AAP-03, NATO's own standardization procedures document, and the review is recorded in the NATO Standardization Documents Database. There is no certification scheme attached to it: no accredited body, notified body or third-party auditor is named anywhere in the agreement, and ratification and implementation stay a matter of national self-reporting to NATO.
Edition 2 supersedes STANAG 7212, Edition 1, dated 15 December 2016. The cover notes that AAMedP-01, Edition B, "has been significantly revised from Edition A and must be read in its entirety," with doctrinal references updated, aeromedical evacuation publications added under Concepts and References, and a new chapter covering spaceflight-related aeromedical considerations.
The agreement covers AAMedP-01, Edition B, and its format and review cycle follow AAP-03. It also names a set of related aeromedical STANAGs, listed for context rather than as requirements of this agreement itself: STANAG 2087 (forward aeromedical evacuation, AAMedP-1.5), STANAG 2228 (allied joint doctrine for medical support), STANAG 2546 and AJMedP-2 (medical evacuation doctrine), STANAG 3114 (aeromedical training of flight personnel, AAMedP-1.2), STANAG 3204 (aeromedical evacuation, AAMedP-1.1), STANAG 3497 (aeromedical training of aircrew in CBRN equipment and procedures, AAMedP-1.8), and STANAG 7147 (aeromedical aspects of night vision device training, AAMedP-1.21).
STANAG 7212 itself sets no software requirement to satisfy; the work is running an aeromedical programme and being able to show its policies, procedures and training match AAMedP-01.
