What STANAG 3827 covers
STANAG 3827 is a NATO standardization agreement, currently Edition 6 (dated 26 October 2017), by which participating nations commit to implement AAMedP-1.13, Edition A, the Allied Medical Publication that sets NATO's minimum requirements for physiological training of aircrew in a high sustained G environment. The STANAG itself carries no physiological training content: it is the ratification and implementation mechanism, not the specification. What AAMedP-1.13 actually requires of a training programme is outside the scope of this page. Edition 6 supersedes the previous edition, STANAG 3827 Edition 5, though the document in front of us does not give that earlier edition's date.
Why it exists
The agreement's stated aim is to respond to an interoperability requirement: "to standardize the minimum requirements for training of aircrew for duty in high onset rate, high sustained G (HSG) environment, in order to facilitate the exchange of comparable information between nations and enhance interoperability." In other words, the problem this STANAG solves is inconsistent physiological training for aircrew across NATO nations, which would otherwise leave nations without a comparable basis for exchanging information and working together in a high-G environment.
Who it binds, and how
A STANAG is not itself a technical specification a training officer or contractor reads and builds a course from. It is the agreement by which NATO nations commit to implement the publication it covers
- here, AAMedP-1.13. That mechanism is the single thing most readers get wrong about a STANAG: it
binds the nations that ratify it, not training providers or suppliers directly. The letter of promulgation records that the agreement "has been ratified by member nations, as reflected in the NATO Standardization Document Database," and a nation implements it "when a nation has issued the necessary orders/instructions putting the details of the agreement into effect." Partner nations sit outside ratification: they are separately invited to adopt the STANAG. A supplier or training provider meets STANAG 3827 only once a national implementation, or a contract that references it, requires training against AAMedP-1.13 - and by that point, the interoperability the STANAG describes needs to already be designed into the training programme, because retrofitting it after aircrew are already qualified the wrong way is far more disruptive than building to the common standard from the start.
Ratification, implementation and review
Ratification and implementation are two separate steps, both tracked through the NATO Standardization Document Database (NSDD). Nations are invited to "examine their ratification of the STANAG and, if they have not already done so, advise the NSO of their intention regarding its implementation," and are separately "requested to provide to the NSO their actual STANAG implementation details." Once implemented, nations are "invited to report on their effective implementation of the STANAG using the form in Annex H to AAP-03"; partner nations use Annex G of the same publication to report their adoption. The STANAG itself "is to be reviewed at least once every three years," with the outcome recorded in the NSDD, and any nation or NATO body may propose a change at any time through the tasking authority.
