What it is
STANAG 3200 is the NATO Standardization Agreement covering minimum requirements for G protective systems - the anti-G suits and ensembles that protect aircrew against the effects of high acceleration forces. This is Edition 10, dated 13 February 2024, superseding Edition 9 of 14 March 2017.
A STANAG is not the specification
A STANAG is the agreement by which NATO nations commit to implement a standard, not the technical specification itself. STANAG 3200's own text is short: an aim, an interoperability requirement, an agreement, and the ratification and implementation machinery. The functional requirements named in its title are specified in a separate publication, AAMedP-1.4 Edition B, which the STANAG names as the standard participating nations "agree to implement". Anyone designing, procuring or checking anti-G equipment against those requirements needs AAMedP-1.4's own text, not this cover agreement.
What it commits nations to
The stated interoperability requirement is "to standardize the minimum functional requirements of G protection systems in order to facilitate the exchange of comparable information between nations and enhance interoperability." Participating nations "agree to implement" AAMedP-1.4, Edition B as the standard that carries those requirements.
What is unusual for a STANAG cover this short is that it spells out what implementation actually means, in four concrete steps. AAMedP-1.4 is described as a standard with an impact on national doctrine, regulation and procedures, on national acquisition of protection equipment programmes, and on the training of the personnel concerned. It is then treated as implemented once: national doctrine, regulation and procedures have been updated "so that G protection for aircrew is ensured"; "the concerned personnel are provided with the anti-G system/ensembles"; those personnel are shown "able to operate" the system; and they "have received the appropriate training on how to use" it. That sequence, policy, equipment, demonstrated ability, training, is a more specific implementation test than most STANAG covers set out.
Who it binds, and how
STANAG 3200 binds nations, not suppliers. It is effective "upon receipt for use by the participating nations and NATO bodies", and it becomes binding on a given nation through ratification, recorded in the NATO Standardization Document Database (NSDD). Implementation is a separate, further step, reported the same way: Allies and NATO bodies "shall provide implementation details through the electronic reporting tool", while partner nations are only "invited to provide their implementation details" through the same channel. A supplier or an air force unit meets STANAG 3200, or the AAMedP-1.4 requirements it covers, only where a national acquisition programme or a contract says so - the document sets no obligation reaching a supplier directly, and it names no NATO-wide effective date (its own "NATO Effective Date (NED)" field reads "Not applicable").
How it's evaluated
STANAG 3200 describes no certification scheme and no audit. What it describes is nations reporting their ratification and implementation status to NATO for the record, through the NSDD and the electronic reporting tool; nobody is "STANAG 3200 certified", and the document never uses that language. Where equipping and training against AAMedP-1.4's requirements does get checked in practice, the assessor and the evidence required are set by the national programme or the contract's own quality clause, not by this STANAG.
