What it is
STANAG 3456 is the NATO Standardization Agreement on Aircraft Electrical Power System Characteristics and Equipment Compatibility Testing. Edition 9 was promulgated in October 2025 under NATO's MC, MCASB, AE. It covers the publications EN 2282, ISO 1540 and MIL-STD 704.
NATO has not released STANAG 3456 publicly, so this page describes it from public NATO publications that cite it: AECTP-300, AECTP-250, AAVSP-04 and STANAG 3909.
What public NATO documents say it requires
AECTP-300 Method 317 cites STANAG 3456 for this requirement: "electrical system(s) used in aircraft of member countries shall have the characteristics as defined in either of MIL-STD-704, ISO 1540 or EN 2282". These are the same three publications the agreement covers. AECTP-300 also says every aircraft electrical power system is required to be designed to retain the electrical characteristics specified in the selected standard document throughout the full range of operational and environmental conditions likely to be encountered in the aircraft in which it is installed, and refers to STANAG 3456 for additional details. Method 317 lists it as a reference alongside MIL-STD-704 and MIL-HDBK-704.
AECTP-250 lists STANAG 3456 among its examples of "Power Quality Standards to control the supply voltage within specified limits for weapon system platforms and utilisation equipment".
AAVSP-04, the standard for avionic discrete signal interfaces that STANAG 3909 adopts, lists STANAG 3456 as a related document. It states that, unless otherwise specified, the 28 V aircraft supply it refers to shall meet the requirements of STANAG 3456 for a Transformer/Rectifier Unit (TRU) supply derived from a constant frequency ac source.
