What it is
STANAG 3531 is NATO's Standardization Agreement on safety investigation of accidents and serious incidents involving military aircraft, missiles and/or UAS, covering the publication AFSP-1.3, edition B. Edition 10 was promulgated on 31 May 2021, under committee MC, MCASB, FS. NATO has not released STANAG 3531 publicly, so this page describes it from a public NATO publication that cites it.
Where it is cited
AATMP-51, a NATO publication whose stated purpose is to harmonise procedures among NATO nations for the airspace integration of military remotely piloted aircraft, lists STANAG 3531 edition 9 among its references; the current edition is 10. In a section on accident and incident investigations, it says the agreement "establishes procedures for the safety investigation and reporting of accidents/incidents of military aircraft, missiles and/or RPAS which involve the equipment, property, facilities and/or personnel of two or more nations." Two further NATO agreements list STANAG 3531 among their related documents, by title and publication (AFSP-1.3) alone. One is STANAG 3318, whose stated aim is to standardise the essential points covered in the aeromedical investigation of accidents and incidents, and which also lists ICAO Annex 13 among its related documents. The other is STANAG 7234, which lists it alongside other unmanned aircraft systems agreements. Neither adds to what AATMP-51 says about its content.
